CALCIUM SENNOSIDE APPLICATION

Sennas act as purgatives in having as principle active ingredients anthraquinone derivatives and their glucosides. The latter are called sennosides or senna glycosides. Senna is used in modern medicine as a gentle but effective laxative thanks to its action on the lower bowel and is especially useful in alleviating uncomplicated constipation. It acts by increasing the peristaltic movements of the colon by stimulating the colonic mucosa. Senna glycosides are listed as ATC code A06AB06 on their own and A06AB56 in combined preparations.

Commercial Senna is prepared using leaves, stalks or even pods of the Senna plant and this depending on the grade or quality required. High quality Senna plants should be bright, fresh, yellowish green colour of the leaves, with a faint and peculiar odour resembling that of green tea, and a mucilaginous, sweetish, slightly bitter taste. High quality Senna plants should be grown pesticide free and in high quality growing environment alleviating the possibilities of heavy metals or undesirable impurities. Once powdered, the product is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture), can become mouldy, and lose its properties over time. This is why powder must be appropriately packaged and stored to preserve its qualities.
